Hey Ben! I hope your family and your career is going the way you just hope for it to be! Anyway, I was really excited for Ashokan Farewell to be on the Sheet Music list. But then terror struck me! You needed to have at least 14,000 fans so it may be available for users to download it, I knew that I wouldn't be getting Ashokan for a very long time. So my question is, why do you have to have a certain amount of fans & not just put it up in the list without any requirements? Thanks 4 everything!

To Lizzie A.
If you browsed through Ben's videos, you probably notice that there are 3 different types of vibrato. They all create a different tone and sound on the violin. I'm sticking with the wrist/ hand vibrato technique since that's the easiest to accomplish first. I'm concentrating on that one because I'm not fully perfect at it, so you can only move on to another vibrate technique once you know you can do that one technique VERY GOOD> Hope this helped!!

Great!! thank you that helps okay ill be sure to learn it correctly then. :-)
I was also wondering if you know any other free websites that i can get video-type-lessons for the violin. Any suggestions would help a bunch! thanks! XD

THIS IS FOR LIZZIE A.
You can learn vibrato right now. I've been playing the violin for a couple of years now and now already know how to use it. However, you need to learn vibrato the CORRECT way. If you do it incorrectly, your muscle in your wrist won't do it correctly if you try to change it to the proper way. It's like muscle memory. Muscle memory is when your muscle gets used to a sort of activity. It's best if you watch Ben's videos. He's got some nice tips on vibrato.

THIS IS FOR SHANNON G.
I'm not sure what Ben Chan uses for his strings, but I use Dominants. Obligatos and Visions are pretty good strings too. So you might want to use any of those, but beware of their prices. They can go as high $50-$100's of dollars. Usually, the best strings don't last long, that's why pros and experts use the expensive ones for performing, and take them off and put on practice strings and not the expensive ones. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know the name of the Tango played by a violinist in the movie, "The Scent of a Woman?"

From: David C. Tue, 07/19/11 12:14am
Mr. Ben Chan, I'm not sure if you know, but there are God Knows sheet music options in the voting polls...

Also, what brand and type of strings do you use for your violin?

From: Cynthia M. Sun, 07/10/11 5:59pm
This for BRITANEY G.
Now I'm only an amateur on the violin for at least 3 years now. I have a private teacher, probably one of the bests in my opinion, and taught me how to cross over strings when playing a fast passage.

I've had so many problems with crossing over to any strings. It is all in the wrist. Just move your wrist in circles, or I should say in an up & down movement, not side-to-side like you normally on the violin. If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask me!;)

Mr.Chan, I don't want to bother you, but you've made a mistake in the name of a sheet music. The piece Sad Romance is from the movie "Thao nguyen xanh". The movie's name is in Vietnamese and can be roughly translated as "Green steppe". The piece "Sad romance" was performed by "Nhom Ngoc Trai". I hope that you can alter the name, if you can, so the performer could earn some credit. Thank you for paying attention!

I have been getting in the habit of making other strings ring when I'm doing string crossings in fast passages. Is it because my bow arm is not placed right...?

From: Yuuko T, Fri, 07/08/11 2:42pm
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the continued passion, generosity of your time and knowledge, and transcription efforts. It truly gives amateurs like me courage and encouragement in the day-to-day commitment of learning to play the violin.

Was bumming around YouTube one day and decided to look up some video game songs and your videos came up. Since I saw them I decided that I would get my violin out of the closet (been sitting there for at LEAST 10yrs). Bought a new bow, replaced the strings & picked up some new rosin. In short, thank you for the motivation to relearn this beautiful instrument again.

Imagine holding something that was made nearly 250 years ago before Australia was even discovered and before the Revolutions.I can imagine the trees that this violin came from living hundreds of years before the master maker made the instrument. No wonder it sounds so beautiful. If it could only speak and tell us of who played it before you owned it.

Thanks Ben, Hope your family is doing fine. And your right don't stress yourself. I can wait for that piece.
XOXO amami.

Amami -- sorry I can't give you specifics on release dates for transcriptions these days. It's much harder to do transcriptions on a regular weekend schedule now that I have so many other things to do, specifically spending time with my wife and baby girl :) But, I'll try to get one of the transcriptions done by the end of today, if possible! This is sort of a hobby of mine and I don't like making it stressful for myself in general.

From: Ben C Sat, 07/02/11 12:22pm
Cynthia -- thanks for the note! Dot isn't crawling yet but she just started eating pureed solids (she hates carrots, lol) I'll try to create some new polls today after the Chan fam goes on a picnic! Thanks for the reminder!

Jamie -- the files I upload are zipped using a program called jZip. It's possible that the zipping protocol isn't compatible with your droid phone. I have a Droid 2 and will take a look to see if it's the same glitch. It should work from a computer, though, and might be easier to read there! Thanks!
